Instead of cutting a plain V and leaving it open, a wide shawl collar is knitted in and folded back on itself — the two folded edges form the long diagonal lines, and the collar sits behind them filling in everything a plain V would leave bare. The same collar stands up at the back of the neck, where the cold actually reaches you. The yarn is fine and smooth rather than chunky, so it is warm without adding width and slides under a coat without bunching at the shoulder, and both the cuffs and the hem are finished with a proper rib so a soft knit keeps its shape.
