Meet the Aileen — the sweater where the animal and the garment were designed at the same time. Most cat sweaters are a plain knit with a picture added: the cat planted square in the middle of the chest, staring out, with a little face drawn on. Here the body is worked in two colors, one above and one below, and the cat lies stretched along that join with its front paws and tail hanging down over the edge, using the seam as a ledge — which means it could not exist on a plain sweater at all. The restraint is what makes it wearable: two small circles stand in for its eyes and there is no other feature, because the moment somebody draws a mouth on an animal the whole thing becomes a children's garment. The yarn is high and brushed with a real pile, so the sweater is soft and warm without weight, and the cat carries that same pile and reads as fur rather than a flat black shape.
